Blood Money comes from the banner of Vishesh Films. Vishesh Films have made a name by making hit films at small budgets. Their formula is simple; take a simple story (possibly a rip-off from a Hollywood film), add some great music, a little bit of titillation and voila! You have a hit. The same seems to be the case with Blood Money. The only thing different is that there is no Emraan Hashmi smooching his way to glory. Instead, we have Kunal Khemu. He has been missing from action for a long time and will be looking to score a big hit. Blood Money is a story about greed; let' s see what the director has to show us.
Kunal (Kunal Khemu) and Arzoo (Amrita Puri) move to Cape Town, South Africa. They both are living the dream life. Kunal has landed a great job in a diamond trading firm. However, he soon discovers that his company is more interested in underhanded dealing. He too rides the money train and life cannot get better. However, the fly in the ointment is his wife. Their marriage starts falling apart.
He soon discovers that his company is lot worse than he imagined. They are involved in arms deals and terrorist activities as well. He suddenly realizes his mistake and changes his ways. However, he is in too deep; it' s not possible to get out so quickly. He tries to come out with the truth, but there is a lot against him. Will he succeed and also get his wife back?
Blood Money is an attempt to make a corporate version of Blood Diamond. The film is bad to begin with. Though a lot of blood and money could have been shown in the film, sadly, there is only one scene where there are some splatter of blood on Kunal' s shirt. The screenplay fails to engage the audience and will definitely induce quite a few yawns.
The direction is strictly alright. Vishal Mahadkar does a decent job with the screenplay that does not really have much going for it. He does a few rookie mistakes in the film, but still manages to make an attempt without messing up too much. He, however, has failed in getting good performances from the lead pair. They both look too mechanical.
Kunal Khemu is in a role that is not made for him. He looks uncomfortable in such a role. Another actor in his place would have suited the role more. Amrita Puri is usually a good actress, but again, just like Kunal Khemu, she was cast in a role that was not meant for her. Mia looks hot throughout the film. Anyways, acting was not required from her, she just had to look pretty and she has managed that. The support cast is also not that great.
Good music has been the Bhatt' s trademark, but it is missing this time in Blood Money. Just one song from the film is a semi-hit and that too probably because of the long smooch scene between Kunal and Mia. The cinematography is good and the cinematographer has tried to make the film slick. Sadly, the poor story makes the audience cringe and they cannot notice the cinematography.
The editing is okay. The production value is also good. The usually miserly Mahesh Bhatt has spent some dough on the film. Too bad, he may have to lose a huge chunk of it. The film was promoted well enough to get a good opening. However, if the movie is bad, the audience vanishes like Rahul Roy vanished from mainstream cinema. Blood Money is a disappointment.
Verdict: Audience will be shedding tears of blood after realizing that it was a waste of money buying tickets for Blood Money.
