Shiney Ahuja' s comeback film, Ghost, also stars Sayali Bhagat. Both of them need to make their presence felt in the industry or will soon fade away into oblivion. Ghost, no points for guessing, is a horror film. The horror genre is one of the most abused genres in Hindi films. For years, they have been peddling crap films under the name of horror. The formula has been the same; show some gruesome make up, throw in some sex scenes and add a revenge plot; you have a horror film.
Judging from the promos and the horrible tagline Ghost - The Past Never Dies…It Kills, the movie also seems to be doing the same mistake. However, they claim to have an original story, so it' s better to at least see what the story is.
City Hospital has become a hotspot for weird murders. Everyone from the staff have some or the other experience in the hospital and they either killed or physically harmed. The only survivor is Dr. Suhani (Sayali Bhagat). Though, she has some experiences herself, she remains unharmed. Now the needle of suspicion is on her. Here steps in investigating officer Vijay (Shiney Ahuja). He too gets sucked into this mystery and turns out that he was a part of it all along. After many twist and turns in the plot, and an appearance from God himself, the evil is finally defeated and Vijay and Suhani come together.
The film is scary, but in a completely different way. You will be horrified that how bad the film is. The biggest flaw is a patchy screenplay. The disembodied spirits are shown so many times that you don' t even feel a little bit scared. Some of the portions in story are unbelievable, even for a horror film. The only solution is to watch this film like comedy and them you might enjoy it bit.
The story is heavily flawed. There are many logical errors. The screenplay lacks coherence. The only well written portion in the film is the gruesome murder of Mary. The story follows a beaten down path. The spirit is seeking revenge from wrongdoers. This concept has been done to death and yet, the writers chose the same plot. The songs in the film should have been written out completely. They increase the TQ (Torture Quotient) of Ghost.
Debutante director, Puja Jatinder Bedi has done a bad job. She should have paid more attention to the story. That is what makes or breaks the film, not its special effects, which by the way are not that great. She has failed to get a good performance from Sayali Bhagat. She is also to be blamed for the tame ending of the film. She has made a rookie mistake by not having the leads in the climax. Horror genre is difficult to tackle for a debut film and she could have gone for something simpler.
Shiney Ahuja does an okay job, but his character is not well crafted and is given some unintentionally hilarious dialogues. Sayali Bhagat is bad. There has been no improvement in her acting skills. In fact, she actually might have gotten worse from her last film. Her acting abilities are the only scary part of the film. Tej Sapru and Deepraj Rana do a good job, but they both together cannot save the film. Julia Bliss isn' t that great either.
The music is bad and is not at all required in such a film. The background score is too loud and ruins the effect. One bad portion worth mentioning is the horrendous makeup. It' s good in some parts but in the majority of the film, especially in the climax, it is bad. Even amateur films have better makeup done in them. The cinematography is good. The frames are well set and create a good atmosphere for a scary film. The editing is a letdown. It could have been better. It does not add anything to an already bad film.
The production value of Ghost is decent, but overall, it can be called inconsistent. Some sets and locations look and feel scary, but many of them are a letdown. The film was not promoted really well. Maybe, the producers were banking on the fact that since this was Shiney' s first film after being released from jail, the audiences would be curious to see the film. However, the producers probably forgot that he is Shiney Ahuja and not Shahrukh Khan that the fans would flock to see the film.
Ghost will burn a huge hole in the producer' s pocket. If Shiney Ahuja came back from the prison to make such film, then he was better off in jail. There are two other films that have been released this week which will eat into the business of Ghost. Also, next week, Agneepath is being released. Therefore, Ghost will not even make it past next week.
Rating: *
Verdict: If you still want to see this film, take your friends to a cheap theatre, sit behind, pass comments and have gala time.
