Don 2 Review

Don - The Chase Begins was a super hit and paved the way for a sequel. Though, the film was not really received well by the critics, the audience loved it and that' s what matteresd the most. Lot is expected from Don 2, especially after the poor reception of Ra.One. Sharukh Khan would be wanting right a few wrongs with this film. Don 2 continues the story of Don who was shown to be still alive in the end of the last film.

With Vardhan (Boman Irani) in jail, Don has no competitor and he rules the drug market of Asia. Now, he has his sight set on the European market. The European drug lords are worried and try to get Don killed. Don being Don, survives the attempt and surrenders himself to the cops. He surrenders to Roma (Priyanka Chopra) who is now working with the police. However, has not has a change of heart, he merely surrenders so he can get Vardhan out. He needs his help for a huge plan where he blackmails a European bank' s vice president (Alyy Khan) to get access to currency plates.

Now begins the heist and the after many double crosses, Don emerges the survivor. However, there are many other unexpected twists in the film.

This film is not about drugs but more like a heist film. However, there is a huge flaw of logic in Don 2. Some twists in the second half just don' t make sense and there are too many cinematic liberties taken. The film is high on style but if there was logic added to it all, the film would have been much better. Shahrukh Khan' s entrance is great which sends the crowd in a tizzy, and he carries on throughout the film making the villainous character likeable.

The writing required serious logic. They have written the stylish parts well but again, this would have been better if the logic factor had been going their way. The film also has a quite few subplots but they are not that difficult to follow. The character of Adi Putra is ridiculous. He makes you laugh every time he opens his mouth. Needless character.

The direction by a Farhan Akhtar is good. He manages to make the character of Don larger than life, and also makes the audience like him for what he is. Performances from everyone are also good under his care. However, he should have paid more attention towards the script. Some parts of the story are illogical. That reduces the impact of the film. Also, after Lakshya, something seems amiss in his direction.

Shahrukh Khan proves that he is still the king. One great quality about him is that he makes the anti-hero work pretty well. Not once would you hate the Don and you would actually root for him to come out on top. He carries the whole film alone and provides the entertainment for the audience. Priyanka Chopra is also good. Boman Irani and Om Puri are as solid as ever. Kunal Kapoor does a decent job. Lara Dutta is also good but she does not have more than to just stand around and look pretty, which she does by the way. Adi Puri needs lessons in acting. His performance is not up to the mark.

The cinematography is superb. The action sequences are well captured and are the highlight of the film. The music is also great. Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy do a great job and make an album almost as good as the previous film' s album. The editing is also good. The production value is great. Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar have pulled out all the stops to make this film one of the slickest of recent times.

The film has two versions that have been released; normal and 3D. Do not watch the 3D version as it seems that the 3D in the film was an afterthought. The technology is totally wasted. There are too many close-ups that ruins the 3D effect.

Don 2 will b a super hit, but a lot more was expected from it. There is also indication that there will be a third part coming out soon.

Verdict: Don 2 is for all the diehard Shahrukh Khan fans. He makes evil look stylish and good.
