Mere Brother Ki Dulhan Review

Yash Raj film' s last outing, Band Baaja Baarat, was a superhit. The film succeeded because it had freshness to it. The pairing and story were also unique in the film. Mere Brother Ki Dulhan also promises the same thing. The music of the film has already hit the marquee and has been creating quite a blast on FM radio stations. Band Baaja Baarat showed that the production house was willing to bank on unique and different storylines. Let’s see whether they have kept with this promise.

Kush (Imran Khan) is an assistant director working in the Hindi film industry. His elder brother, Luv (Ali Zafar), works in London. Luv has a girlfriend, Piyali (Tara Dsouza), but she breaks his heart and he gives up searching for love. He asks Kush to search a bride for him in India as he trusts his choice. Kush obliges and after going through a series of weird women he zeroes in on Dimple (Katrina Kaif). He meets her family and they too are happy with the union. However, in the course of all the arrangements for the marriage, Kush and Dimple fall in love with each other. She confesses her love to him. Now, he is in a dilemma, should he follow his heart and elope with dimple, or should he sacrifice his love for the sake of his brother who has already had his heart broken once.

Sounds different? Absolutely Not! Yash Raj films have again gone down the same tried, tested and beaten to death path. The love triangle depicted in the films is not new at all. So many films have shown the same kind of dilemma with just a few changes here and there. It does not just end with the storyline. Almost all Yash Raj films have a same feeling in them, from the music to the clothes of the characters; all of them give a feeling of déjà vu.

The script is nothing new. The concept isn’t that great, especially after you name the film, Mere Brother Ki Dulhan. The audience can see the whole story coming from miles away. The writers could have at least had a few subplots that would have kept the audiences guessing. However, we get to see none of it. The dialogues of the film are one of the few things that work. It is quite youthful and the younger audience will understand it well. The humor is also decent. However, the story offers nothing unique and the length of the film is also quite long. Unnecessary scenes should have been chopped.

Debutante director, Ali Abbas Zafar is okay, but should have shown more creativity. He has failed to create situations where the audience will keep guessing and be surprised in the end. Though, he has handled the emotional and comic scenes well, a lot more was required from him. He has also not pushed the actors to do their best, except for Katrina. Though, it can be understood that him being a debutante would have been wary of pushing them hard. Overall, he has a lot to learn but still not a bad effort for a debutant.

Imran Khan is inconsistent. After his brilliant act in Delhi Belly, he disappoints in Mere Brother Ki Dulhan. He looks uncomfortable throughout the whole film except for the comic scenes. Ali Zafar is decent but does not have much scope to do anything. Katrina Kaif is solid. This is her best performance till date. She makes the character of Dimple her own and lives it out on the big screen. She has stolen the whole show from her male counterparts. The rest of the supporting cast is also good.

The music of the film is good. It will ensure that film will get a good opening, and this is what matters for the film to be a hit. Nowadays, a good opening ensures that the film will become a hit, no matter how good or bad it is. The music by Sohail Sen is extremely fresh. The picturisation of the songs is also good. The cinematography is good, but quite typical of all the Yash Raj films. The editing could have been better; at least the length of the film should have been trimmed.

The production value of the film is good. The sets and locations are quite lavish and go well with the storyline. Mere Brother Ki Dulhan has also been promoted extremely well. Not to mention the fact that any Yash Raj production will get a good share of the patrons of the production house. Despite the film being predictable, it will be a hit. The main reason being that there are no other releases along with it, except for a couple of Hollywood flicks. Sadly, the film will do well for all the wrong reasons and not the story.

Verdict: Romcom fanatics will like this film, but it would have been better had it not been so clichéd.
