Never again will the Hindi film industry see a star like Amitabh Bachan. Therefore, Bbuddah Hoga Tera Baap might be the last time we get to see him in is his image of the yesteryears. This is the big selling point of the film and of course, the man himself, Amitabh Bachan. He is at a phase in his career where he can really experiment with the kind of films he does and this film is a perfect example. All these aside, the film still has to be well made. You can' t expect people to watch anything just because it has Amitabh Bachan in it. Let' s check out the story.
Viju is a former gangster who is back in the city for some work. Everyone guesses he is here to kill the ACP Sonu Sood. However, he has other things on his mind. He tries his best not stay under the radar by constantly getting into trouble. He beats up people who call him ' bbuddha' . He also meets up with his ex-wife (Hema Malini) who tries her best to be his conscious. All these factors culminate into a great climax.
No points for guessing that this film is completely centered on Amitabh Bachan. Getting straight to the point, this film is not his best performance. This film is a good tribute to his character of the 70s. He manages to recreate the action-packed character who is not necessarily a white night. Many of Bachan' s character had shades of grey and so does this one.
The story is not path breaking by any means. However, it is a typical potboiler of the 70' s and even manages a plot twist in the second half. The first half is disappointing. Granted that it is used as a way to establish Bachan' s character but they still could have had some kind of story. The second half is loads better. The film moves at a good pace and so do all the characters. Still there are parts in the film that have no relevance and are just pure waste of time. The whole track involving Raveena Tandon is useless and should have been removed while drafting - absolute waste.
The dialogues are good in parts. Some of Bachan' s dialogues are awesome and fans of the actor will even want to whistle loudly in the theatre. The scenes between him and Hema Malini are the high point of the film. They invoke a lot of emotion and the audiences are treated to a great give and take between two superb actors.
The direction is good, but then again how much skill is required with an actor like Amitabh Bachan. Puri brings his typical south style and it surprisingly suits Bachan. He also gets great performances out of the rest of the cast. However, he is due for criticism for the first half. This is the part that has stopped the film from being a complete entertainer. I won' t be surprised if some people leave in the first half.
Bachan carries the whole film. He is at his angriest best. He also sings and dances like a youngster. Hema Malini is impactful. She will manage to touch the audiences with her small role. Sonu Sood is good too; I suspect his ACP character was another tribute to Bachan' s angry young man. The rest of the supporting actors do a competent job.
The music of the film is good. Vishal-Shehkhar already has an ace up their sleeve in the form of "Go Mira Go". The editing is slick and so is the cinematography. The production value of the film is also good. The film has been promoted well and they have the added advantage of Mr. Bachan playing the lead. Some may disagree, but I still felt his name is enough to draw a good crowd to the theatres.
The few things not going in their favor is the first half of the film. The other is the release of Delhi Belly. This film has created a lot of curiosity and has been running to packed houses. Therefore, Bbuddah Hoga Tera Baap will have to struggle hard to keep going.
Rating: **
Verdict: This Bbuddah might run out of steam mid way. Bbuddah Hoga Tera Baap will have to fight hard to stay afloat.
