Are you lingering to watch a decent horror flick? Well, in Kaalo, you get a decent watch. Indian cinema screen has been deprived of good quality and that' s why nothing phenomenal ahs been achieved so far in this genre.
Raaz, Bhoot and Phoonk tried to salvage things but they were just a drop in the ocean. Raaz (First Part) was the last film according to my opinion that had the right chills at the right place and scared the hell out of me. Bhoot tried but was just an average attempt. Phoonk series was an intelligent opportunity but wasted.
In January, came Shaapit with some good melodious numbers but has the same age-old and run of the mills story and tanked. No need to talk about Hisssss.
Vikram Bhatt is busy filming India' s first ever 3D horror movie called ' Haunted' slated for an April, 2011 release and much hope is pinned on the same to resurrect the same genre. It' s high time we get to see that spine chilling fanfare.
Coming to the latest spooky flick, Kaalo, it' s a good attempt but a wrong timed and lesser known star cast based product, which works in only part.
Final Word? Kaalo has its share of drawbacks but it' s a simple attempt that can not set box-office ablaze.
Let' s see the basic plot of the movie in the pivotal word of Mr. Taran Adarsh, a trade analyst and film critic.
Kaalo was a witch who lived in Kulbhata during the 18th century. She was killed and buried by angry villagers for sacrificing young girls to satisfy her greed for immortality, but her fear lived on. Years later, villagers spoke of Kaalo' s sightings yet again. They claimed she was even more angry and dangerous and she was back to finish what she left incomplete. Kulbhata was vacated overnight by scared villagers.
All roads leading to Kulbhata were sealed by horrifying tales of Kaalo killing anyone who dared to enter Kulbhata. Until a bus carrying a few passengers on its way to Kuldevi had to pass through Kulbhata. One of the passengers on the bus was a twelve-year-old girl named Shona [Swini Khara], who is traveling alone to spend her vacation at her grandmother' s house in the neighboring village.
During the course of the journey, Shona and co-passenger Sameer [Aditya Shrivastav] strike a rapport. Sameer is traveling with a bag loaded with gun powder to blast a small hillock, which would give way to a water canal for his drought-hit village. Badly disfigured and thirsty for blood, Kaalo could smell the girl from miles away... and heads straight for the bus. When the passengers realize they were staring into death, everything changes. They realize Shona is their reason for dying. Everyone wants her out of the bus, except Sameer.
Sounds like a good tale, what say folks?
The way the camera moves in the movie is exceptional and the cinematography done by Pushpank Gawde deserves full marks. Enchanting!
The spooky director Wilson Louis goes a step forward when you remember his previous outing Ho Sakta Hai and two steps in the case of the most recent one, Mallika. He has been trying to give something new and must say he is trying very hard. Good efforts, keep it up!
Talking of the performances from this horror flick, Aditya Shrivastav does well. Swini Khara does not have much to do. Other actors support the main leads well.
On the whole, Kaalo can be a good watch for the strict fans of the genre. From the box-office point of view it' s shall turn out to be a non-starter because of an unusual appeals, promotions and most importantly the release time.
Rating - **1/2 (Decent)
Verdict - Kaalo has some chills but those are few to scare the day out of you!
