Equipped with a novel concept, this movie takes you on journey that is mysterious and gripping till the very end! Granted that there are a few flaws in storyline and direction, but for a debut director the movie is a pretty decent attempt.
The movie begins in very mysterious fashion with a man who finds himself in the middle of the desert having no idea who he is. Survival instinct kicks in and he starts robbing travelers. He manages to find an abandoned shed in the desert and makes it his home.
He comes across three troubled travelers; Harry (Himanshu Kohli), Toto and Pali (Barkha Madan). They name him Baba (Sartaj Singh Pannu) and take him to their home town. Baba offers Harry help in getting back his land from the local goons, but in return he has to help him get his identity back and find his wife. Harry is unable to do this so Pali offers help instead, and both of them embark on a journey in search of his wife. Baba keeps getting flashes of his wife Riva (Iris Maity), their honeymoon and him getting beaten up by someone.
The whole movie is based around the mystery of Baba' s identity. The story of the movie moves at a good pace maintaining the mystery factor till the very end. Yes there are a few mistakes in the movie like what is the message of the movie? The director also fails to elaborate on the relationship between Baba and Pali. The character of the wife remains neutral without taking any sides. And some of the dialogue is corny and unintentionally funny.
Though the story of the movie is good, the screenplay is like a roller coaster ride. Some scenes like the one where Baba narrates his story to eve teasers are good, whereas some are really not required. The script could have been tighter.
Acting wise, the performances are good. Usually the director casting himself as the lead have always given disastrous results, but this movie is an exception. Sartaj is perfect for the role of Baba; he has given a riveting performance aptly displaying Baba' s strength and vulnerability at same time. He definitely is an actor to look out for. If that is not enough he has also written and directed the movie.
Writing of the movie is good especially in maintaining the mystery factor. The movie moves straight towards the main story without wasting anytime in stupid sub-plots and love stories. It must be said that Sartaj the actor is better than Sartaj the writer.
In the Direction department Sartaj again does a good job proving he is a good multitasker. He has managed to extract good performances from all his actors and also flow of the movies is good. All the actors have put in good performances making the film a visual delight.
Speaking of visual delight the cinematography by Sandeep Patil is amazing. He brings the dead deserts of Rajasthan back to life and shows some breathtaking scenic beauty in areas where there is no scenery. The Music done by Charu Mohan and Nitesh Pires is good on the ears and only adds to the movie.
The movie is a good product with much of the credit going to Sartaj Singh Pannu although it could have been better had the script been drafted more. With only one or two good movies this week ' Soch Lo' will definitely manage to get a few eyeballs. The movie will be a hit and get a good profit at the box-office.
Rating: **1/2
Verdict: With the craze around ' Peepli Live' dying down and last week' s movie being a dud this movie will have a good run at the box-office.
