Mahesh Manjrekar is no doubt one of the best story tellers in Indian film industry. We have witnessed a good number of films from his factory which includes ' Vaastav' , ' Astitva' , ' Nidan' , ' Virrudh' , ' Kaante' and many others. However ' Vaastav' is his most acknowledged film till date. So, whether ' City Of Gold' has worked up to his standard of work? Indeed or we can say ' City Of Gold' is the next big thing after Vaastav by the director.
' City Of Gold' depicts the tragic tale of the mill workers of Mumbai from 80s. Many of us may not know the truth that the today' s flashy destinations - malls, night clubs of the city - are built on the ashes of those cotton mills. Those mill workers were the real pioneers of the today' s business capital (Mumbai), but following the strike in 80s, the mills were closed one by one and the mill workers became history with the blink of an eye. ' City Of Gold' tells the story of one of those affected worker' s family and their struggle for earnings.
So you might think that ' City Of Gold' is one more realistic cliché film. Don' t know whether Manjrekar has depicted the situation completely or not, but the film holds lot that a movie bug will love. In some sequences you will get the feel of ' Vaastav' .
Let us warn you that it includes violence, betrayal in relationships and also the language used might shake you. Meanwhile these are the things which actually work best to make a good film. Plus to the material is the right casting. Every actor, most of whom are from the Marathi film industry - Siddharth Jadhav, Sachin Khedekar, Sameer Dharmadhikari, Vinay Apte, Seema Biswas, Satish Kaushik, Shashank Shende, Ganesh Yadav, Veena Jamkar, Kashmira Shah and Vineet Singh - all are supremely talented. Every one of them, despite the length of their role leaves a mark on your mind with their performance. However, one actor who stands out is Karan Patel. He has given a sensational performance.
Mahesh Manjrekar made the movie in two languages Marathi (Lalbaug Parel) and Hindi (City Of Gold). He has handled many of the sequences in a very unique way. ' City Of Gold' off-course is recommended. It' s the story of those wounded spirits, who were once the shine (gold) of the city. Watch it to know some unknown truths of the city that never sleeps, Mumbai. Arun Rangachari
