Finally, an animated movie that dishes up entertainment. Animated movies, in India haven’t yet been up to the mark, but Goel Screencraft and I-entertainment give it their best shot this time around. Directed by the multifaceted Jyotin Goel, Bird Idol feeds into the media frenzy around the singing competition, Indian Idol. Close on the heels of the sixth season of American Idol, Bird Idol is a mix of desi flavour, life in Mumbai city, the influence of reality TV and the unending story of breaking the mold.
The story begins with a pair of birds running away from their forest home to live in ' anonymity' in the cosmopolitan city. The reason: primeval laws of the land - no interbreed unions (a prehistoric novel idea?) Their life in the city is a polished one, their rockstar kid, Hummi, growing up oblivious to his parents’ rocky past.
In a world of traditional bird music, Hummi dares to bring ' Human music' to the stage. He is confronted by traditionalists and other birds that are not so welcoming of the trend setter. But not all is sweet and well in a story of birds in love, singing in trees. A dose of drama is served up in the form of probably the films only dark character, the vulture – Dhamki (get it??)
This animated feature, though well done in terms of animation and dubbing, is just another Bollywood dramarama. The songs sound like you’ve heard them before and some of the dialogues are stolen (Anu Malik style, except most of the material is taken from Bollywood itself). This is a movie that is overdone with metaphoric meaning, if you care to look behind the slapstick gullible comedy for the mediocre. Goel has her heart in the right place in telling her story, but falls short in her attempt to send her message across.
If you do not care for the subtext, leave your intellect at the door when you watch the film. It is street humor dished up mumbaikar style, which is entertainment in its own right. Kids will love this movie for what it is. If you’re looking for light heart animated comedy, this is a sure shot one time watch this weekend!
